Have you ever used PDF Enhancer and its plethora of features?
It's a great tool for removing a lot of the "fluff" that occupies a PDF as well as optimizing them.
One of the many useful things that you can do with it is to setup an Enhancer ("workflow" in PDF Enhancer) that converts to CMYK, fixes RGB Grays/blacks and then can impose the document as step and repeat, n-up or printer spreads. Particularly useful to digital printers! Not to mention in the same processing you can have it make a low res soft proof and watermark the proof with "proof".
It also makes a great companion to PitStop. Have you ever had one of those jobs that just seems to choke when preflighting in PitStop? Try running it through PDF Enhancer to have it clean up the document. You'll be surprised at how much faster it can go.
